11/20/2009 Sunday’s Softball Clinic Cancelled Softball COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball clinic scheduled for Sunday, November 22nd has been cancelled. The remainder of the Panther Softball Team's weekend schedule will remain the same.
Saturday, November 21st clinic focusing on hitting and bunting fundamentals and defensive field techniques for all positions will resume as scheduled. Registration for session one is set for 8:30 a.m. with the clinic running from 9:30 a.m. – noon in Alumni Hall. Session two will begin shortly after the conclusion of the first session. |
11/17/2009 Ashland Erases Early Deficit to Edge Panthers, 66-61 Mens Basketball COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team got a glimpse of what the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has in store as they dropped a physical drop down drag out fight at Kates Gymnasium in Ashland, Ohio. The Panthers looking for their first win in school history (0-16) over its future GLIAC rivals came up on the short end of a 66-61 battle versus the Ashland Eagles.
The Panthers charged out of the gates ready to make a statement to their new conference as they scored the games first 15 points. Ohio Dominican was clicking at both ends of the floor as they held the Eagles scoreless for over six minutes of the first half until AU's Kale Richardson knocked down a jumper with 13:45 left in the first half. more
After shaking off the early season jitters the Eagles got their legs underneath them to battle back into the game. Ashland would go on a 15-4 run over the next five minute to cut the lead too two midway through the half. The Panthers and Eagles would trade punches over the remainder of the half and headed to the intermission knotted at 30.
The second half would be much of the same as the two teams went back-and-fourth accounting for seven ties and seven lead changes in the game. The Panthers began to pull away late in the game as Adriene Rodriguez (Sr./Lorain, OH) hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:26 to put ODU up by seven.
Little did they know, but that would be the last points of the game for Ohio Dominican as missed free throws and turnovers plagued the Panthers down the stretch. Thanks to clutch free throw shooting over the final two minutes Ashland would use a run similar to the Panthers at start the game to earn the victory. The Eagles scored the games final 12 points to give new head coach John Ellenwood his first career win.
Ashland held on for the win despite shooting just 29.4 percent (10-of-34) from the floor in the second half. ODU shot 43.3 percent from the field, but connected on just 5-of-10 from the free throw line in the second half.
Zak Kapron (So./Mavern, OH) led the way for the Panthers with 13 points and seven rounds, while Aaron Gibbs (So./Oberlin, OH) chipped in with 13 points and nine boards. Ashland was led by Blake Saunders, who came off their bench to score 13 points.
Ohio Dominican (0-3), still looking for their first win of the season, returns to action this Friday, November 20th as they take on Spring Arbor (MI) University in their home opener. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall. |
11/16/2009 St. Thomas Edges Panthers in AII Finals Volleyball COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team dropped a tight four-set match to top-seeded University of St. Thomas (TX) on Saturday in the finals of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) Qualifying Tournament. With the victory the Celts advance to the 30th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Panthers dropped to the losers bracket in their second match of the qualifying tournament after a four-set loss to St. Thomas. The Panthers fell behind early, but evened the match at one with a 25-16 victory, but dropped the next two sets by the scores of 26-24 and 25-20 to fall to the losers bracket. more
The Panthers extended their season with their second three-set victory over Southwestern with victories of 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 to set up a rematch with the Celts in the tournament finals.
Ohio Dominican, needing two more victories to advance to their first national tournament in school history, got off to a great start with a 25-22 victory in the first-set. The Panthers lost the momentum as they dropped back-to-back sets 25-23. ODU's season would come to an end as they dropped the fourth-set by the score of 25-21.
Leading the way for the Panthers in their final match was outside hitter Rachel Billing (Jr./Anna, OH; pictured) who had a team high 12 kills. Also recording double digit kills were Stacy Rogg (So./Cincinnati, OH) with 11 and Cassie Vome (Jr./Mason, OH) with 10. Ashley Hughes (So./Heath, OH) led the way on the defensive side with 15 digs and Cassie Schroeder (Sr./Columbus Grove, OH) had a team high 23 assists.
ODU earned their second straight 20-win season and finished their last season in the NAIAwith a 24-18 overall record. |
11/16/2009 Five Panthers Earn All-AII Recognition Volleyball COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team was well represented on the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) all-conference team in their first season after six players recently named to the 2009 All-AII Teams. ODU finished the season with their second straight 20-win season and were the runners-up in the AII Tournament in Houston, Texas.
Leading the way on the first team were juniors Rachel Billing (Anna, OH) and Summer Hale (Galena, OH). Billing returned to the team this season after missing all of last year with a knee injury to lead the Panthers in kills (436) and digs (551). Hale, ODU's most versatile player, was second on the team with 282 kills, third in assists and blocks and averaged 1.62 digs per game. more
Also earning first team recognition were sophomore Stacy Rogg (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Shannon Nadler (Leipsic, OH). Rogg tallied 207 kills and was second on the team with 517 digs. Nadler had an outstanding rookie season with 261 kills and had 129 total blocks.
Selected to the second team for the Panthers were senior Cassie Schroeder (Columbus Grove, OH) and junior Cassie Vome (Mason, OH). Schroeder battled injuries early in the season, but still managed to finish second on the team with 462 assists and had 197 digs. Vome finished with a total of 193 kills and had 101 digs. |
