Willy Merrick enters his first season at Ohio Dominican University as the head men's soccer coach and Director of Intramurals. Merrick spent the previous three seasons as the top assistant to former head coach Eric Nichols and will inherit a team he is familiar with and helped to build in the past three seasons. Merrick becomes the eighth head coach in Panther history.
The Panthers went 19-3-0 in 2007 and made their first trip to the national tournament in school history. With a number of years of coaching experience, Merrick brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the Panthers helm this season.
Prior to joining the Panther staff, Merrick spent five years as the head varsity soccer coach at Thomas Worthington High School. During that time, he led the team to the 2001 State Championship, 2002 State runner-up, the Regional runner-up two consecutive years and earned a sixth place spot on the National Top 25 Boys High School Soccer poll. In 2000, Merrick was named the Ohio Capital Conference Coach of the Year. In addition to Thomas Worthington, Merrick held coaching positions for the Westerville North High School soccer team and the Eagles Soccer Club of Upper Arlington.
Merrick spent seven years playing professional soccer with the Buffalo Blizzards, the Columbus XOGGZ of the United States Independent Soccer League (USISL), the Cincinnati Silverbacks, the Lexington Bandits (USISL) and the Indiana Blast (USISL).
He began playing collegiate soccer with the University of Rio Grande before transferring to Marshall University where he was a three year letterwinner in soccer and football. In 1992, he was a member of the Division I-AA National Championship football team at Marshall.
