10/14/2009 Greg Elber Wins Wittenberg Fall Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican sophomore Greg Elber was crowned the tournament medalist at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational as he defeated Transylvania University 's Hunter Frazier in a playoff on Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio. The Panthers had two teams playing in their final tournament of the fall season, with their ‘A Team' finishing in sixth-place and ‘B Team' coming in eighth at the 15-team tournament held at Windy Knoll Golf Club.
Elber, a sophomore from Willoughby Hills, Ohio, trailed Craig Osterbrock of Wittenberg by two-strokes firing a 74 in the first round. Elber was one stroke better on round two as he shot 73 finishing the two round tournament tied with Frazier at 147. Elber earned the victory as the players went to the scorecard to break the tie. more
Wittenberg University earned the team title, their fourth of the fall season, as they combined for a total score of 598. Transylvania came in seven strokes back to finish second in the fall tournament.
Joining Elber as the top finishers for the Panthers were Nick Trego (Sr. /Dublin, OH) who tied for sixth place shooting a two round score of 151 (77/74). Kevin Hartoin (Fr. /Cincinnati, OH ) also turned in a score of 151, with rounds of 76 and 75.
In the Panthers four fall tournament they finished 4th at the Kisor Classic, 3rd at the Bethel Fall Tournament, 13th at Lindenwood and 6th at Wittenberg. ODU will return to action this spring as they compete as an independent in the NAIA and vie for a shot at a second trip to the NAIA National Tournament. |
10/2/2009 ODU Athletic Hall of Fame Inducts Six in 2009 Class
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican University Athletic Hall of Fame will induct six former Panthers student athletes during the Annual Homecoming weekend of October 9 and 10. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner, sponsored by the ODU Alumni Association and ODU Athletics, will be held on Friday, October 9 in the new Bishop James A. Griffin Student Center . This event is open to the public and tickets may be purchased by calling (614) 251-4643 or emailing ODU's Doug Sweeney, Senior Development Officer, at sweeneyd@ohiodominican.edu.
ODU introduced its first Hall of Fame class during the 1996-97 season and has honored 15 individuals in its short history. more
Joining the Hall of Fame will be Tom Fitzpatrick '69 (basketball), Mike Hickle '93 (baseball), Craig Brown '94 (baseball), Jerry Lanier '95 (basketball), David Flavius '99 (soccer), and Michelle Welage-Galloway '00 (basketball). Here is a brief biography on each of this year's inductees:
Tom Fitzpatrick '69 (basketball): Fitzpatrick was a member ODC 's first men's basketball team. He was a 3-time co-captain and named the 1967-68 Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player. Tom is one of two players to have their jersey numbers retired in school history.
Mike Hickle '93 (baseball): A stand-out ODU hurler on the baseball team, Hickle, was a 2-time Mid Ohio Conference and District 22 Player of the Year in his time at ODU. He was selected as a Second Team NAIA All-American in 1992 and Honorable Mention Team in 1993. In both of those seasons he was also a All-Great Lakes Region Team member. Hickle currently holds the record for innings pitched (107.1), complete games (10), winning percentage (11-0, 100%), and fewest walks allowed (36) in a season.
Craig Brown '94 (baseball): Craig Brown is this year's second member of the Panthers baseball team inducted into the Hall of Fame. Brown was an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and All-Great Lakes Region Team selection in 1994. The left handed pitcher was a 3-time NAIA District 22 selection and twice named to the Mid Ohio Conference First Team. Currently he holds the career records for most starts (46), complete games (29), wins (37), and ERA (2.25). Brown also holds the season record for wins with 13 in 1994.
Jerry Lanier '95 (basketball): Lanier was the face of ODU basketball from 1992-95. With over 1,800 points, the former guard ranks second in school history in points scored and first in points in a season with 704. He ranks in the top 10 in 11 categories including the top performer in school history in free throws made (438). Lanier was a 2-time First Team All-Mid Ohio Conference selection and 2-time NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete. During the 1993-94 season he was selected as a Third Team NAIA All-American. He also was a First Team NAIA District 22 performer in 1992-93.
David Flavius '99 (soccer): Flavius became the first and only ODU player selected in the NPSL drafted as a first round selection of the Kansas City Attack. A forward on the men's soccer team from 1995-98, Flavius, holds nearly every offensive scoring record in school history. He is first in career goals scored with 99, first in hat tricks (5), and points (220). His 38 goals and 80 points in a season ranks tops in school history. While at ODU he was named the 1998 American Mideast Conference Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American in that same season. He was a 2-time First Team All-Mid Ohio Conference performer and earned two other all-conference accolades. Flavius was also selected to the NSCAA/Umbro All-American First Team NAIA and Ohio. He was also named the MOC Player of the Week 3-times and AMC Player of the Week twice.
Michelle Welage-Galloway '00 (basketball): In her first season at ODU Welage-Galloway was selected as the Mid Ohio Conference Freshman of the Year. From there she continued to rewrite the ODU record books and ranks in the top 10 in nine categories. An outstanding guard/forward, Welage-Galloway, ranks 5th all-time in points scored with 1,465 and second in free throws made with 479. She was a 2-time All-Mid Ohio Conference selection and earned Second Team All-American Mideast Conference accolades. She was also a member of the AMC Scholar Athlete Team and a NAIA Academic All-American in 1999-00.

9/28/2009 Gary Wright Leads Panthers to 3rd Place Finish
COLUMBUS, Ohio –Gary Wright of the Ohio Dominican men's golf team posted a two day total of 147 on his way to a third place finish at the Pilot Invitational over the weekend in South Bend, Indiana. The Panthers also placed 3rd overall at the tournament hosted by Bethel College (Ind.).
The Panthers shot 305-299 for a total of 604 which was five strokes behind second place finishers Huntington University. Marian (Ind.) earned the team championship as they shot a total of 586 (296/290). more
Marian was led by Trey Pfund who was crowned the medalist with a combined score of 142 (73/69). Tommy Lucko of Madonna University came in second with a two round total of 144 (76/68). Four players finished tied for third place, including Gary Wright (So, Warsaw, OH; pictured) of ODU, who finished with a combined 147 for the tournament. Wright was named to the All-Tournament team after shooting rounds of 72-75.
Wright and Josh Wolfe (Jr, Galion, OH) were the only two players to finish in the top 10 for the Panthers. Wolfe shot a combined score of 150 (77/73) to come in tied for ninth place overall. Nick Trego (Sr., Columbus, OH) finished tied for 12th after firing rounds of 77-74 for a total of 151.
Rounding out the top five for the Panthers was Mathew Culp (Fr., Pickerington, OH) at 28th and Kevin Hartoin (Fr., Cincinnati, OH) finishing in 33rd place.

9/14/2009 Panthers Finish 4th at Kisor Classic
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's golf team opened the fall season with a 4th place finish at the Kisor Classic over the weekend. The Panthers and Otterbein Cardinals co-hosted the tournament at ODU's home course of Cumberland Trail Golf Course.
The Panthers shot a 303-297-310 for a total of 910 which tied Cedarville University. Marian (Ind.) came in one-shot ahead of Humber College (Toronto) to earn the team title with a score of 873. Heidelberg University shot a total of 900 to finish the tournament 3rd overall. more
Kevin Hartoin (Fr., Cincinnati, OH) led a youthful group in scoring for the Panthers as he shot a seven-over par 223 (76-74-73) in his first collegiate tournament. Gary Wright (So., Warsaw, OH; pictured), another new comer to the ODU line-up, finished tied for 13th place with a 225 (75-74-76). Josh Wolfe (Jr., Galion, OH) rounded out the top 20 finishers for the Panthers coming in tied for 19th with a score of 227. Wolfe shot rounds of 76-71-80 with his middle round being the lowest for ODU in the tournament.
Tyler Sebert (Fr., Grove City, OH) led five ODU individuals with a scored of 226 (71-75-80). Sebert finished tied for 17th overall and his first round score of 71 tied for the Panthers low for the weekend. Alex Brinkman (So., Brecksville, OH) shot a 230, Matt Culp (Fr., Pickerington, OH) posted a 233 in his ODU debut.
