11/13/2009 Panthers Season Ends in A.I.I. Semi-Final
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team saw their season end on Thursday night, dropping a very physical 1-0 contest to the No. 3 ranked Simon Fraser Clan in the semi-finals of the A.I.I. Conference Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.
In a game where 12 yellow cards were issued and 44 fouls called, the Panthers season ended on a penalty kick given in the 8th minute. ODU played well, but could not find many scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes as they were outshot 10-6. In the second half, the Panthers needed to find an answer to their 1-0 deficit but could not as they finished their season with a 7-7-3 record. more
Ohio Dominican finished the game with 13 shots compared to 21 by Simon Fraser. Each had multiple shots on goal but neither team could take advantage as the game's lone goal ended the Panthers season.

11/12/2009 Panthers Win Opening Match of A.I.I. Tourney
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team earned an opening round win at the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) Conference Tournament on Wednesday night with a 1-0 result over the No. 4 seeded Lambuth University.
The Panthers got into the scoring column early in the 7th minute when Pat McGrath (Jr.,Cincinnati, OH) headed home a corner kick offering from Justin Wheeler (Fr.,Gahanna, OH) to give ODU the 1-0 lead. Ohio Dominican maintained their control of the game for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, but could not increase the score as the half ended with the Panthers leading 1-0. more
ODU continued to create chances in the second half as four shots were turned away from the Lambuth goalkeeper Brett Borm. Defensively, the Panthers turned away all threats as the advanced to the semi-final round of the A.I.I. tournament with the 1-0 shutout win.
ODU's Tyler Gleason (Jr.,Grove City, OH) recorded four saves to earn his fifth shutout win of the season.
The Panthers will advance to the semi-final round on Thursday, November 12th when they face the No. 1 seed Simon Fraser. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, Arizona. The winner will advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon with the winner of the tournament advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in Fresno, California. |
11/8/2009 Men’s Soccer Returns to Post Season Play

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new challenge embraced Ohio Dominican athletics as they look to complete their final year as a member of the NAIA in 2009-10. The men's soccer team, looking to return to the NAIA National Tournament for the second time in three seasons, competed as a member of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) for the first time. The Panthers, after a 6-6-2 season, recently qualified for the AII post season tournament and earned a #5 seed. The tournament begins on Thursday afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona. Times and opponents are yet to be determined. more
ODU opened their 2009 campaign against future Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival (GLIAC) Lake Erie College on August 28th with a 2-0 shutout win. Things continued to go well for the Panthers as they earned three victories in their next four games, opening the season with an impressive 4-1 record. A double overtime tie and an own goal, 1-0, loss saw the Panthers lose momentum as they went just 1-2-2 in their next five contests. Injuries and a tough schedule gave ODU reason to doubt, but the resiliency of the men's team kept their season alive with key victories over St. Francis and Northwood late in the season.
The Panthers were led offensively by freshman Justin Wheeler (Fr./Gahanna, OH). Wheeler finished with two goals and six assists in his first season at ODU. Defender AJ Mueller (Jr./Dublin, OH) added an offensive spark, scoring three goals and added three assists on the year. Junior Chris Feller ( Fairfield , OH ) tied Mueller for the team led in goals scored, adding three in 13 games played.
First year starter Tyler Gleason, a junior from Grove City, Ohio, turned in a solid performance as the net minder for the Panthers. Gleason recorded four shutouts with a 1.07 goals against average.

10/25/2009 Offensives woes Continue for Panther Men by Ryan Beigle COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team battled to a double overtime scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon at Panther Field. The Panthers, playing against future Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Saginaw Valley State University, failed to find the scoring column for the second straight game but played well defensively to earn the tie.
With offensive chances minimal in the opening 45 minutes, the Panthers and Cardinals battled for control of the midfield. Saginaw Valley took a 6-4 shots lead and 2-1 shots on goal advantage to the halftime break as neither team found an offensive answer. more
The second half saw much of the same, as both teams created a few quality scoring threats, but continued to be turned away by the defensive thirds. ODU seemed to pick up their aggression midway through the half, yet could not solve their scoring woes. The second stanza finished with the Panthers claiming a 6-5 lead in shots.
The first overtime period saw the Cardinals earn a scoring opportunity in the early minutes. The ODU defense held strong leading to no shots on goal. At the start of the second overtime period, the Panthers looked to be the fitter team and earned three shots. None found their mark as the game finished 0-0.

The Panthers, return to action on Saturday, November 7th as they will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to play Oakland City University in a neutral site, non-conference, game. Kick-off for the men is set for 3 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium. |
