10/12/2009 Women’s Golf Concludes Fall Season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican women's golf team concluded their fall season over the weekend with a 8th place finish at the Pat Clouse Invitational hosted by Wittenberg University. The tournament was held at the par-71, 5821-yard links style Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield, Ohio.
The 17-team field was led by the University of Findlay that combined for a total of 644 (330-314) to earn the team title. Findlay rallied from 11 strokes behind on Day 1 to capture a two-stroke team victory, followed by Walsh at 646 and DePauw at 662. more
Earning medalist honors was Nikki Kulasa of Walsh University who shot a two-day total of 155 (77-78).
Ohio Dominican was once again paced by freshman Amanda Costanzo (Silver Lake, OH) with a two-day total of 173 (87-86), good for 30th place. Karalyn Newman (So. /Springfield, OH) came in tied for 33rd place with a two-round total of 176 (87-89). Kelsey Brock (So. /Zanesville, OH; pictured) shot a team low round of 86 on Day 2 helping the sophomore to a 39th place (tied) finish with a combined score of 178.
The Panthers will take the remainder of the year off and return to action in February for the spring portion of their competition season. |
10/5/2009 Second Day Surge Leads Walsh to Auld Crafters/Kisor Classic Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Walsh University women's golf team shot a final round of 317 to come from two strokes back of Otterbein College to earn the team title at the Auld Crafters/Kisor Classic hosted by Ohio Dominican University. The young Panther team finished fifth overall as they shot a combined score of 713.
After a two hour rain delay on Friday, play got under way and it was Otterbein College that battled through elements to shoot a combined 328 to take the early lead at the 3rd Annual Auld Crafters/Kisor Classic. With just two strokes separating the Cavaliers and Cardinals and the weather conditions improving Walsh University fired a combined 317 to earn the team title with a final score of 647. Otterbein finished the two round event with a team total of 656. more
The Cavaliers were led by Nikki Kulasa who shot a combined 153 (78/75) to earn the tournaments medalist award. Walsh had three players finish in the top 10 with Kim Smith (4th) and Katy Collins (6th) joining Kulasa.
Ohio Dominican was nine strokes better on day two, but couldn't make up any ground on the leaders as they shot rounds of 361-352 (713). The Panthers had three players, Amanda Costanzo (Silver Lake, OH), Kelsey Brock (Zanesville, OH) and Karalyn Newman (Springfield, OH; pictured), finished tied for 19th overall. After turning in a score of 91 in the opening round Brock tied her own career low at the Panthers home course with an 84 on Saturday to shot a combined 175. Newman was just as impressive as she shaved nine strokes off her first round total as she fired an 83 on Saturday to also shoot 175.
The Panthers will round out the fall season this weekend as they travel to Springfield, Ohio for the Wittenberg Clash at the Clouse. |
10/2/2009 ODU Athletic Hall of Fame Inducts Six in 2009 Class
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican University Athletic Hall of Fame will induct six former Panthers student athletes during the Annual Homecoming weekend of October 9 and 10. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner, sponsored by the ODU Alumni Association and ODU Athletics, will be held on Friday, October 9 in the new Bishop James A. Griffin Student Center . This event is open to the public and tickets may be purchased by calling (614) 251-4643 or emailing ODU's Doug Sweeney, Senior Development Officer, at sweeneyd@ohiodominican.edu.
ODU introduced its first Hall of Fame class during the 1996-97 season and has honored 15 individuals in its short history. more
Joining the Hall of Fame will be Tom Fitzpatrick '69 (basketball), Mike Hickle '93 (baseball), Craig Brown '94 (baseball), Jerry Lanier '95 (basketball), David Flavius '99 (soccer), and Michelle Welage-Galloway '00 (basketball). Here is a brief biography on each of this year's inductees:
Tom Fitzpatrick '69 (basketball): Fitzpatrick was a member ODC 's first men's basketball team. He was a 3-time co-captain and named the 1967-68 Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player. Tom is one of two players to have their jersey numbers retired in school history.
Mike Hickle '93 (baseball): A stand-out ODU hurler on the baseball team, Hickle, was a 2-time Mid Ohio Conference and District 22 Player of the Year in his time at ODU. He was selected as a Second Team NAIA All-American in 1992 and Honorable Mention Team in 1993. In both of those seasons he was also a All-Great Lakes Region Team member. Hickle currently holds the record for innings pitched (107.1), complete games (10), winning percentage (11-0, 100%), and fewest walks allowed (36) in a season.
Craig Brown '94 (baseball): Craig Brown is this year's second member of the Panthers baseball team inducted into the Hall of Fame. Brown was an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and All-Great Lakes Region Team selection in 1994. The left handed pitcher was a 3-time NAIA District 22 selection and twice named to the Mid Ohio Conference First Team. Currently he holds the career records for most starts (46), complete games (29), wins (37), and ERA (2.25). Brown also holds the season record for wins with 13 in 1994.
Jerry Lanier '95 (basketball): Lanier was the face of ODU basketball from 1992-95. With over 1,800 points, the former guard ranks second in school history in points scored and first in points in a season with 704. He ranks in the top 10 in 11 categories including the top performer in school history in free throws made (438). Lanier was a 2-time First Team All-Mid Ohio Conference selection and 2-time NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete. During the 1993-94 season he was selected as a Third Team NAIA All-American. He also was a First Team NAIA District 22 performer in 1992-93.
David Flavius '99 (soccer): Flavius became the first and only ODU player selected in the NPSL drafted as a first round selection of the Kansas City Attack. A forward on the men's soccer team from 1995-98, Flavius, holds nearly every offensive scoring record in school history. He is first in career goals scored with 99, first in hat tricks (5), and points (220). His 38 goals and 80 points in a season ranks tops in school history. While at ODU he was named the 1998 American Mideast Conference Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American in that same season. He was a 2-time First Team All-Mid Ohio Conference performer and earned two other all-conference accolades. Flavius was also selected to the NSCAA/Umbro All-American First Team NAIA and Ohio. He was also named the MOC Player of the Week 3-times and AMC Player of the Week twice.
Michelle Welage-Galloway '00 (basketball): In her first season at ODU Welage-Galloway was selected as the Mid Ohio Conference Freshman of the Year. From there she continued to rewrite the ODU record books and ranks in the top 10 in nine categories. An outstanding guard/forward, Welage-Galloway, ranks 5th all-time in points scored with 1,465 and second in free throws made with 479. She was a 2-time All-Mid Ohio Conference selection and earned Second Team All-American Mideast Conference accolades. She was also a member of the AMC Scholar Athlete Team and a NAIA Academic All-American in 1999-00.

9/28/2009 Young Panthers Take 5th at Pilot Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican young women's golf team takes 5th at the Pilot Invitational in South Bend, Indiana over the weekend. In the two round event the Panthers shot a total of 677 in their second tournament of the fall.
The Panthers finished 22 strokes better than their last tournament as they shot rounds of 340-337 for a total score of 677 to take a fifth place at the invitational hosted by Bethel College (Ind.). Leading the way and crown the team champions was the hosts from Bethel College who shot a team total of 650. The Pilots were 32 strokes better on day two on their way to the team title. Hope College (Mich.) came in second with a team total of 655 (326-329), followed by Wheaton College 's (Ill.) score of 656 (331-325). more
Bethel 's top performer Katie Powell was crowned the tournaments medalist as she shot a two day total of 152. Powell shot rounds of 81-71 for the top spot. Cassie Blanton of Wheaton came in second with a score of 158, while Cassie Sneller of Hope finished third with a combined score of 161.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Amanda Costanzo (Fr., Silver Lake, OH) who fired scores of 82-85 for a total of 167. ODU's Sarah Vonderembse (So., Lima, OH; pictured) also turned in top 20 finishes with a score of 168 (83/85) and finished tied for 16th place. Kelsey Brock (So., Zanesville, OH) shot a two day total of 171 (87-84), to tie for 20th place with teammate Karalyn Newman (So., Springfield, OH). Newman shot rounds of 88-83.
Ohio Dominican will return to action this weekend as they host the Auld Crafters Kisor Classic on October 2nd and 3rd. The Panthers will hold their only tournament of the season at their home course of Cumberland Trail. |
