11/15/2009 Women’s Soccer Season Ends in Shootout
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Though the season had its ups and downs, the Cal State-San Marcos Cougar women's soccer peaked at the right time, and that culminated in the squad defeating Ohio Dominican to win its second-consecutive A.I.I. Conference Championship on Saturday.
The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and two overtimes, but the third-seeded Cougars prevailed over top-seeded Ohio Dominican when in the ensuing shootout, the latter's fifth shot was stopped by the crossbar. Cal State-San Marcos won the shootout, 4-3. more
A scoreless deadlock was broken in the 55th minute, as Lucia Asbury got the Cougars on the board first. But the Panthers, whose play absolutely lived up to their seeding, got the equalizer in the 75th minute when Jennifer Holton (Fr./Johnstown, OH) finished a cross from Sierra Patterson (So./Brecksville, OH).
The score would persist through regulation and overtime, putting the Cougars in a familiar situation. Facing Simon Fraser in last year's A.I.I. championship game, CSUSM earned the conference title by winning in a shootout.
Ohio Dominican took an early 3-1 lead after Slone Fleak (So./Sunbury, OH), Katie Newton (Sr./Brecksville, OH) and Melanie Marx (Fr./Reynoldsburg, OH) connected on their penalty kicks. The Cougar goalkeeper Kaycee Gunion saved the Panthers fourth and when ODU's final attempt hit the crossbar the Cougars earned their second straight trip to the NAIA National Tournament. |
11/8/2009 Changes ok for Panthers as they look to Post Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A season of changes and new challenges welcomed the 2009-10 Ohio Dominican women's soccer team. One year removed from their first trip to the NAIA National Tournament ODU changed the dynamic of the team with the naming of new head coach Jonathan Meade . Meade would replace former head coach Paul Habrecht who not only led the Panthers to their first national appearance, but also led ODU to three conference titles. Seemingly, change would be okay for the Panthers as they excelled in their new system and with an 11-3-2 record will return to the post season. more
The new look Panthers open the season with a 2-1 victory against No. 23 Bethel College (TN) to give ODU a strong start, but two consecutive shutout losses could of spelled disaster for an experienced group. The Panthers found their offense midway through the season as they accounted for 45 goals scored compared to just 16 goals allowed on the year. After posting their second most wins in school history, ODU earned the #1 seed in the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) conference tournament.
The Panthers were led offensively by sophomores Sierra Patterson (So./Broadview Heights, OH) and Becky Williams (So./Parma Heights, OH). Patterson and Williams each finished with 11 goals on the year. Freshman Kirsten Hoy (Columbus, OH) was a welcome addition as she added nine goals and three assists in her first season in black and gold. Jennifer Holton, another freshman from Johnstown , Ohio , added four goals and nine assists from the midfield in her rookie season. ODU as a team racked up 117 points on the season, their most since 2001.
Junior goalkeeper Aimee Simonet (New Albany, OH) turned in a solid performance in net for the Panthers. Simonet recorded three shutouts and posted a 0.93 goals against average.
